The typical individual usually thinks of different skin colors or the different backgrounds everyone has. By definition diversity is the condition of being different. The term ‘diversity’ encompasses a broad scope. There are many realms to diversity such as economic, cultural, and gender. However a type of diversity that has been growing in buzzword in recent years, especially among the conservative communities of college campuses, is intellectual diversity. Hess touches on th e topic of a young college student of Washington State, Ed Swan, a conservative Christian father of four that was flunked with the explanation that he â€Å"revealed opinions that have caused me great concern in the areas of race, gender, sexual orientation and privilege.† In David Horowitz’s â€Å"In Defense of Intellectual Diversity† students from the University of Denver and Duke are described as having to deal with seeing partisan propaganda posted on doors and hallways as well as joking warnings from teachers that say that any Republicans should drop his course because of his strong â€Å"liberal† opinions. An isomer is a chemical species with the same number and types of atoms as another chemical species but with distinct properties because the atoms are arranged into different chemical structures. When atoms can assume different configurations, the phenomenon is termed isomerism. There are several categories of isomers, including structural isomers, geometric isomers, optical isomers, and stereoisomers. Isomerization can occur spontaneously or not, depending on whether the bond energy of the configurations is comparable. Types of Isomers The two broad categories of isomers are structural isomers (also called constitutional isomers) and stereoisomers (also called spatial isomers). Structural Isomers: In this type of isomerism, the atoms and functional groups are joined differently. Structural isomers have different IUPAC names. An example is the position change seen in 1-fluoropropane and 2-fluoropropane. Types of structural isomerism include chain isomerism, where hydrocarbon chains have different degrees of branching; functional group isomerism, where a functional group may split into different ones; and skeletal isomerism, where the main carbon chain varies. Tautomers are structural isomers that can spontaneously convert between forms. An example is keto/enol tautomerism, in which a proton moves between a carbon and oxygen atom. Stereoisomers: The bond structure between atoms and functional groups is the same in stereoisomerism, but the geometrical positioning can change. This class of isomers includes enantiomers (or optical isomers), which are nonsuperimposable mirror images of each other, like left and right hands. Enantiomers always contain chiral centers. Enantiomers often display similar physical properties and chemical reactivities, although the molecules may be distinguished by how they polarize light. In biochemical reactions, enzymes usually react with one enantiomer in preference to the other. An example of a pair of enantiomers is (S)-()-lactic acid and (R)-(-)-lactic acid. Alternatively, stereoisomers may be diastereomers, which arent mirror images of each other. Diastereomers may contain chiral centers, but there are isomers without chiral centers and those that arent even chiral. An example of a pair of diastereomers is D-threose and D-erythrose. Diastereomers typically have different physical properties and reactivities from each other. Conformational Isomers (conformers): Conformation may be used to classify isomers. Conformers may be enantiomers, diastereomers, or rotamers. There are different systems used to identify stereoisomers, including cis-trans and E/Z. Isomer Examples Pentane, 2-methylbutane, and 2,2-dimethylpropane are structural isomers of each other. Importance of Isomerism Isomers are especially important in nutrition and medicine because enzymes tend to work on one isomer over another. The substituted xanthines are a good example of an isomer found in food and drugs. Theobromine, caffeine, and theophylline are isomers, differing in the placement of methyl groups. Another example of isomerism occurs in phenethylamine drugs. Phentermine is a nonchiral compound that can be used as an appetite suppressant yet doesnt act as a stimulant. Rearranging the same atoms yields dextromethamphetamine, a stimulant stronger than amphetamine. Nuclear Isomers Usually the term isomer refers to different arrangements of atoms in molecules; however, there are also nuclear isomers. He is the â€Å"Angry Young Man† who expresses his frustration for the lack of feelings in his placid domestic life. This criticism I find to be true, Jimmy as a character does not dwell in self pity or apathy, but instead see’s the world as unjust as a whole. His use of the term Enthusiasm is a response to his yearning for positivity, as he simply feels none from Alison. His endless efforts for discussion turn in the end into frustration, which inevitably evolves into confrontation. His endless scanning of numerous newspapers is evidence of this, as he tries to get a sense of the unjust world of his eye’s, to in all hope develop a series of discussions to exercise his mind, which is normally diverted by Alison and Cliff, which leads to his quest for confrontation. Jimmy as a character appears to be destructive to those in his life, but in contrast, there is the argument to be made that his destructiveness has its origins in Alison’s and Cliffs inability to level with his Ideas and opinions, which they rather continually ignore or shadow with Cliff’s immature comments, leading to Jimmy’s frustration through the lack of ability for discussion of the day’s affairs. An example of this comes in page 3, Jimmy †we’ll, she can talk, can’t she? You can talk, can’t you? You can express an opinion†¦.. This quote from the start of the play indicates Jimmy’s frustration at the quality of discussion, which evolves in his intimidating questioning of Alison’s and Cliffs ignorance towards his attempts to start discussions. Evidence of Alison’s torment of jimmy is shown straight away by her reply, â€Å" I’m sorry. I wasn’t listening properly. † This shows Alis on’s ability to tease and cause Jimmy’s destructiveness as she in a phrase pokes the bear, as she is well aware of the odds being favourable for a bitter response from Jimmy, and her reliance upon Cliff to defuse any altercation between her and Jimmy. Look back in anger† was also bringing class as an issue before British audiences. Through Jimmy as the voice of the lower-middle class, Osborne is blaming, amongst other things, the upper class for the country’s miserable situation. Jimmy uses Alison’s brother Nigel as a symbol for the privileged, and therefore despised, upper class’s members who fill important positions regardless of whether they are talented or not but merely as a result of their connections. â€Å"He’ll end up in the cabinet one day, make no mistake. But somewhere at the back of that mind is the vague knowledge that he and his pals have been plundering and fooling everybody for generations. † Jimmy’s character is built upon his view that the world around him is unjust and his further comments on Nigel reflect this further, â€Å" the only thing he can do- seek sanctuary in his own stupidity. The only way to keep things as much like they always have been as possible, is to make any alternative too much for your poor, tiny brain to grasp. It takes some doing nowadays. It really does. Jimmy means by this that those who hold high places in society do so not through ability but through ancestral beginnings, which he fairly see’s as being inept and obsolete towards forming a society that he believes should exist. When he say’s â€Å"it really does†, he is saying that the task that Nigel takes is becoming more difficult as more of the population is becoming more and more educated by the year, which he sees as being the form of a future revolution resulting in the expulsion of Nigel’s class and ‘pals’ from guarding high positions of government from the lower class’s. It is significant that, although Jimmy studied at a university, he runs a sweet stall. This could be considered to be a sign of rebellion. But in truth it is a sign of his character that he is idle in his lack of drive to change society through his own effort, instead he prefers to be bitter and awaits other’s to make the changes he seeks. Jimmy’s character, changes once Helena arrives, He becomes a show off but the most important change is when Alison leaves. He appears to feel free. This is because Helena is able to level with him, in conversation and confrontation. Before Alison leaves, we see Jimmy testing Helena, â€Å" I hope you won’t make the mistake of thinking for one moment that I am a gentleman†. The fact that Helena can converge in discussion with Jimmy delights him as he feels he is performing before an audience. Someone who he feels is listening to his every word with intrigue. He even say’s, â€Å"I think you and I understand one another all right. This is the first indication of Jimmy’s character showing mutual respect with another character apart from Hugh’s mother. Once Alison leaves, and Act 3 begins, it is apparent that Jimmy is in a better place. His questions once deflected by Alison are now responded to by Helena, there are no long rants to restore order and no raised voices enforcing his will to be heard. Helena is open to activity, unlike Alison. For example on page 83, Jimmy â€Å"†¦. I was thinking we might work it into the Act†, to which Helena replies â€Å" good idea†. The fact that Helena is open to activity show’s us a characteristic of Jimmy we did not see early on in the play when living with Alison, he appears to be happy and jubilant on occasion, because of his thoughts and ideas are being responded to positively. In the play we see many sides of Jimmy’s character at different stages of the play, at the beginning he appears as a dreamer, who see’s the world as unjust but not full of self-pity. He becomes confrontational when frustrated by his wife and friend, who he feels trapped with in a dialogue dead setting. Were he see’s no escape and feels a wasted talent. But in truth is not prepared to take action on behalf of himself. His connection with Helena appears first as one based on hatred on the backdrop of difference in class, but he shows characteristics towards her, that of mutual respect, and eventually one of lust. A revolution, as defined by the Oxford English dictionary, Is the overthrow of an established government or social order by those previously subject to It. Although, the colonists did overthrow the British monarch, there was not enough change In American society for it to be a revolution. After the colonists won the war with Britain, they created their own form of government. A foundation and basis for the newly formed government was the Articles of Confederation, which was largely influence room the British government.These articles temporarily provided the Americans with law and order, before they wrote the Constitution. The American Revolution caused change politically, in the government, and socially, particularly toward women and slaves, but did not have significantly change America. The Declaration of Independence was an Important influence on the Americans when they were planning a new government. Thomas Jefferson personal motto was Rebellion to Tyrants Is Obedience to God (Bristol 106). This thought can be seen whenJefferson wrote In the Declaration of Independence that when a long train of abuses and usurpations pursuing Invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government (Declaration of Independence). The Americans had this thought in mind when they were writing the Constitution. They hoped to control both state power and government power. The end result was a government that had three branches, each limiting the others power. This is one of the few changes that the Americans had room the British. The painter is trying to show how determined the colonists are on this war.This painting also shows how united the colonists have become because of the war. Jefferson did not want to stray too far from his feeling of belonging to ancient British institution (Abortionist 107). This is way he did not want to completely remake all of society. Many different types of people were affected by the American Revolution. Two of the groups that were affected were women and African-Americans. Women despised Ewing treated as less superior to men and wanted to change societys view on this subject.As John Adams and others were writing the Constitution, Abigail Adams wrote her husband that told him to remember the ladies and be more generous and favorable to them than your ancestors. Do not put such unlimited power in the hands of the husbands (Adams 1). When he read the letter, he laughed and ignored her request. Before the American Revolution, the majority of African-Americans were slaves. After the revolution, some of them earned their freedom through fighting but any were forced back into slavery.The free African -Americans were given more freedoms as a result of the revolution. Benjamin Banker was privileged to get a college education and showed his gratitude by writing a letter to Thomas Jefferson. In the letter, Banker thanks Jefferson for his willingness to help their cause (Banker 2). He repeatedly talks about the position that Jefferson is in. He also shows his respect by always calling Thomas Jefferson sir. At the end of his letter he writes mires most obedient humble servant (Banker 3).In Jefferson letter back to Banker he writes that everyone must see that everyone is equal regardless of the color of their skin. At the end of Jefferson letter he also ends with the same ending as Banker did. The American Revolution helped the colonists separate and distinguishes themselves from others. During this time period, the colonists founded a new country and a new government. They gained independence and overthrew their previous leaders. Though the revolution caused change in America, it lacked significant change to be called a complete revolution.
